A steer's life

I'm no cowboy. Heck, I don't even know any cowboys. But since the emergence of the web I've become more and more aware of how many great artists there are west of the Mississippi. Maybe it's because I grew up in the east and went to school here but my art world consisted mainly of New York City, Europe at least a hundred years ago, and Diebenkorn. Now my horizons have expanded and it's a constant source of pleasure to discover incredible artists practically on a weekly basis. It's unfair to single out one place geographically but I do have to wonder what they put in the water out there in Utah. What accounts for the large number of wonderful artists... Chelsea Bentley, Aaron Lifferth, Michael Workman, Doug Braithwaite, and George Allen to name a few? And I'm sure there are many more I don't know about. I'd love to learn more about the Utah art community and what makes it so strong.

Hey Thanks Steven. I have always been impressed with your work as well, and have often looked to your work for inspiration. As far as Utah artists, you can't forget Paul Davis, Dave Dornan, Lane Bennion, Zach Proctor, Joseph Alleman, Brian Blackham, Trent Call, and John Erickson. I love all of their work, and I think there is somthing in the water....Maybe you all should move to Utah!

Thanks Aaron. I'll definitely look up the artists you mentioned.

Also, thanks Sreenivasa and Norma!

Hi Steve--I agree with you, there are a bunch of good painters in Utah--good to see Aaron weigh in with additional names. I'll add another: Jean Arnold.

There's a really good painter living in Vermont, too--name of Steve Goodman.

Thanks, Don for the compliment and for adding another artist to the list. I really enjoyed her work and found it interesting that she has a connection to Vermont. There are a lot of great artists here but I'll leave that as a subject for another post.

Hi Steve- I just found your blog and look forward to following your compelling work. What a great eye and style you have for composing landscapes. I agree with your thoughts about the Utah set. If you have time to participate in a workshop with Michael Workman it will push your skills even further.
