Still life with fruit 5.28.08
Oil on gessobord
6"x6"
SOLD

Here's another still life but this time cropped a little closer. The challenge was to create a sense of refinement without losing a spontanenous, slightly raw feeling. Maybe the two sensibilities can co-exist and aren't mutually exclusive.

Still life with pears
Oil on gessobord
8"x8"
$175

This one started out with the usual slapdash strokes but soon settled down into a long seige with the battle scars left to tell the tale. What it lacks in bravado I hope it makes up for in form and volume. Truth be told, it wasn't the pears and tomato that gave me difficulty but rather the real subjects-light and mystery.

P.S. I reworked this one after posting it so some of you may remember a slightly different version.

Across the lake
8"x8"
Oil on gessobord
SOLD

This is one of those paintings that come together quickly and you only hope to have enough sense to know when to stop. I do feel a little guilty though because I was practically channeling (style-wise) two of my favorite Vermont artists, Eric Aho and Craig Mooney. Oh well, if you're going to try to learn from others, you might as well emulate artists who's work you really admire. Speaking of artists I admire, I was sad to hear of Rauschenberg's death today. He was a true giant of 2oth century art.

Quebec barn #2
Oil on gessobord
8"x8"
SOLD

This is a second version of the previous painting. This time I cropped the image and simplified it, making for a more abstract feel. I have to admit that this is one of my favorite paintings so far. Would love to hear which version people prefer. There's no right answer (except in my mind).

Quebec barn
Oil on gessobord
6"x6"
$100

I took a snapshot of this barn while on a bike ride in Quebec last weekend. Two things I like about the finished painting...

1. There was some sort of structure in front of the barn door but at a quick glance it looked like a cross, a nod to Quebec's religious heritage.

2. The bubble gum color in the foreground is reminiscent of the over-the-top colors one sometimes sees in Quebec (in my opinion).
